Combatting Negative Self-Talk

Updated: Jul 6, 2021

Living a life that is positive and healthy in all ways is a goal that takes work and dedication to accomplish. The problem is that NEGATIVE self-talk is actually a habit and a common habit at that. This NEGATIVE habit is fueled daily by the things we allow into our mind by way of what we listen to and observe.

Many of us have a difficult time living a positive life in part because we do not know about the tools that are available to help us pave the way to a positive and healthy lifestyle. Positive self-talk is one of those tools.

There are seemingly endless products and foods available that can help you live a healthier lifestyle, yet there's very little focus on the effect of mental health, and most specifically, positive self-talk.

Positive self-talk is a simple technique that doesn’t cost any money or take much time. You can start implementing this strategy as soon as you're ready to make a positive and healthy change in your life.

Why should you live an unhealthy life? You deserve much better than that!

How Positive Self-Talk Indoctrinates You with Positive Thinking and Action

Positive self-talk is not something that a lot of people tend to take seriously; they poo poo it away as just an insignificant option because they don't realize how much self-talk plays are part of how we experience life in general. The process, however, is actually quite simple, but it does take some dedication on your part.

You have to want a better lifestyle for this to work, and you need to believe that you can change your life and your habits that contribute to its quality. In essence, you are changing your HABITUAL inner dialogue when you implement positive self-talk techniques.

Think about it, if you're having a bad day and negative thoughts are running rampant in your mind, it not only affects how you think and feel but also how you react to situations throughout the day. For example, if you’re feeling unusually down or negative, you might find something to complain about, even if it’s the most trivial detail! That negativity is sure to color all events of the day. That’s how much a negative attitude can affect how we think, feel, and react.

Just as negative thinking begets negative action, positive thinking begets positive action. Have you ever been in an exceptionally good mood and able to just shrug off minor hiccups that would normally derail you?

When you have moments of doubt, you can CHOOSE to respond with something positive instead of allowing those negative thoughts to affect how you feel. The bottom line is that it’s a conscious choice you have to make and, as you make it repeatedly, you create the HABIT of it.

Are you willing to choose the positive?

Using Positive Affirmations to Combat Negative Thinking

Many people use positive affirmations or ideal statements when they are coming up with responses to the negative thoughts. If you're having negative thoughts about your life, for example, you can respond with the affirmation: “I am worthy of being a happy and satisfied person.” This simple statement really can turn your thinking around and make positive thinking your way of thinking.

Positive affirmations are easy to create, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Write down all your repeating negative self-talk (for example I’m all alone without support)

  2. Underneath or next to each one, write the opposing positive self-talk (in this example: I am surrounded by people who support me and help me)

  3. Write them in the present tense (I have, I am)

  4. Each time you feel the negative self-talk creep in, replace it with your positive affirmation. Repeat them often. As you do, this activity will begin to create the HABIT of being a positive thinking person and the negative thinking will start to dissipate or lessen.
